Dog is eating flip flops?

now that warmer weather is out my dog has once again began eating my flip flops. She did when she was a puppy, but they were only out for a month because i got her in august. This is the only thing she now chews on. My question is should i keep them out and when i can catch her tell her no or keep them locked away because if they are out she thinks she "can" eat them? I'm just worried if they are kept locked away, if i accidentaly leave them out she doesn't know that she can't really have them because i don't reinforce it.

if that is the only thing she is chewing on now....try sprinkling some pepper or tobasco sauce on them. That usually does the trick. And make sure she has her own toys that she can chew on.
Reply:You should use "wolf talk" by saying/ growling NO! It works for my dog , and she stopped chewing my siblings stuffed animals! If that doesn't work, WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T HIT YOUR DOG!!!!! Instead, you should put your flip flops up so she won't get them, or wear them.
Reply:I agree, what is it with Old Navy flip flops? Leave them out and they are destroyed! You're best bet is to put your shoes away where the dog can't see them. Kick them off in a bedroom (or bathroom?) where you can easily close the door and deny admittance. Dogs are chewers and just because you may catch her in the act doesn't mean she won't do it when you leave the house. I no longer tempt my dog with flip flops. Think about what those things are made of-plastic foam, rubber, leather, cloth, etc...Not the best for the digestive system if swallowed. It's a pain to put them away, but, hey, it's a whole lot easier in the long run...

**Comment: I know there are alot of opinions here, but I get a thumbs down from someone who doesn't think you should pick up after yourself and avoid letting a dog eat foreign materials?? Wow, I don't see anyone else suggesting any better alternatives....
Reply:my dog loved the ones from old navy. dont ask me why. lol

how about you try picking your shoes up until your dog is older.
Reply:My dog only eats my shoes. Do you think she knows or does she just like my shoes? I am not sure. As a precaution and a responsible owner, I put my shoes away.

It seems just about everyone who told stated the shoes should be put away was given a thumbs down. I guess the flip flops should be left out and hope you catch the dog in the act so you can correct the problem.
Reply:haha, k,

Buy bitter yuck .. or anything like that... leave a old pair/ruined pair out with the yuck spray on it .. after a few tries the dog will get it..

=D
Reply:I had mine out the other day and my puppy started chewing them too so i took them away told her no and she hasn't chewed them since. So I suggest correcting her when she begins to do that, and then you can keep your shoes out where you want.
Reply:My dog has started chewing my shoes once in a while. We try to keep them picked up in a basket, but some times they get missed. She doesn't always do it, but when she does the shoes are ruined. She won't eat my husbands shoes at all? I am bringing in a trainer to work with her on these types of behaviors. I will post what she says about how to stop it.

Also, no one offering friendly advice should get a thumbs down. I am sure I will get one the moment this is posted.

Here's a tip from doglogic.com for preventing your pup from feasting on your footwear:

You, as the owner, must accept responsibility to teach the dog what to chew on. But remember that it's easier (and more pleasant) to reward your dog frequently, rather than punish him frequently! This means removing valuable or important items from his reach. Either put those things away or keep the dog confined when you are not watching him. Deterrents like Grannick's Bitter Apple Taste Deterrent or Tabasco sauce can be helpful in reducing destructive chewing, but they aren't a cure for destructive chewing and shouldn't replace good supervision.
Reply:they eat or tear the weirdest things up I would put them away so it can't happen. my dog use to eat g-strings and leave everything else alone.
Reply:My dogs mission in life is to get my sons socks off! We just take his socks off as soon as we get home. The dog will listen to everything except no to the socks!!! I would just keep the shoes away from her. Untill she is older.
